Tip of the Month: How to Access TreasuryDirect through ID.me

If you have U.S. Savings Bonds, you may or may not have received information regarding a new login system for TreasuryDirect.gov. As of October 28th, TreasuryDirect customers will need to use ID.me to log into their accounts. This is a private digital identity-verification service.

It’s possible you already have an ID.me account, as it is used by other government agencies such as the Social Security Administration and the IRS. If you already have a login for ID.me, you will be directed to that page to login from the TreasuryDirect login page. If you know you have an account but are having password or multi-factor authentication issues, you can find troubleshooting information here. If you do not, you will click Create a Wallet to begin set up.

This is a multi-step process, so be sure to set aside some time to complete it. Before you begin the process, you will need to make sure you have 3 things ready:

  • A smartphone with a front-facing camera

  • A government-issued photo ID (U.S. driver’s license, state ID, passport, passport card, or permanent resident card)

  • Your Social Security number

This help article from ID.me will give you an idea what the process of setting up your ID.me wallet will entail.

The Social Security Administration has created an instructional video that could be helpful as well if you run into issues with the process.
